Breaking the Healthcare Training Bottleneck: Bridgewest Ventures Leads $2M Pre-Seed in Aegros AI
The world cannot train healthcare workers fast enough. By 2030, the global healthcare system will demand a workforce of 80 million, but we are currently on track for a devastating shortage of 15 million nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals. Here in New Zealand alone, we are facing a shortage of 400 nursing educators by next year.
The core issue isn't a lack of demand or a shortage of willing students. The true bottleneck is the system’s physical inability to train them at scale.
This is why Bridgewest Ventures is incredibly proud to announce that we have led a $2M pre-seed investment round in Aegros AI, a venture co-founded by Seen Ventures and led by Mark Christian. Aegros AI is an assessment-grade simulation platform built to break this exact bottleneck..

The Crisis in Clinical Training
Historically, medical training has been strictly bound by physical limits. Clinical placements are incredibly scarce, traditional simulation labs are expensive to build and run, and can only serve a handful of students at a time - often requiring a highly inefficient 1:5 instructor-to-student ratio.
"The bottleneck in global healthcare isn't a lack of people who want to help; it's our physical capacity to train them. Mark's deep expertise makes Aegros AI the perfect bridge between cutting-edge AI and the strict clinical accuracy the industry demands." - Kate de Ridder, Investment Director, Bridgewest Ventures.
The Technology Shift: Moving Beyond the Mannequin
The global medical simulation market is currently valued at USD$3.2 billion and is forecast to exceed USD$13 billion by 2034. However, until very recently, the opportunity to truly digitise and scale this training was not technically tractable. The stakes in healthcare are too high for standard, off-the-shelf AI.
Aegros AI utilises Mark Christian’s proprietary framework and simulation orchestration which has been refined over 15+ years. Leveraging the recent convergence of technological advances in language models and image generators, Aegros AI implements effective guardrails to adhere to the strict clinical accuracy that institutions demand. The result is a platform that is entirely hallucination-free, creating an assessment-grade simulation environment that can scale globally.

A World-Class Founder with Institutional Trust
Aegros AI is spearheaded by Mark Christian, one of the most credentialed operators in healthcare simulation globally.
Mark is a serial entrepreneur with several successful exits. He previously served as the Global Director of AR/VR at Pearson (which he eventually spun out into the venture-backed GIGXR). Beyond just building technology, Mark holds multiple patents, has published peer-reviewed work on simulation efficacy, and possesses a deep network across global universities and publishers.
Importantly, Mark has proven that institutional buyers at the highest levels trust his work. As the CEO of Orion Immersive in London, his company was sponsored by NHS England during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep vital clinical training running when in-person education collapsed. That is a real-world credential very few healthcare edtech founders can claim.
"We are finally at a point where AI can deliver clinical simulations at scale. We aren't just changing how healthcare workers learn, we are removing the physical limits on how many we can train." - Mark Christian, Founder and CEO of Aegros AI.
The New Zealand Advantage
Mark is originally American and has worked and lived in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Therefore we are particularly excited that Mark has chosen to incorporate and build Aegros AI right here in New Zealand at the Seen Ventures studio in Wynyard Quarter. Mark saw the advantages of a strong local talent pipeline, government grants, a supportive local ecosystem of aligned startups and access to Bridgewest’s private capital, active commercial support and global network.
Mark has immediately created multiple well-paid jobs here, building on New Zealand's growing centre of excellence in digital humans and avatar creation and Edtech companies. As well as bringing senior healthcare AI roles and IP ownership directly into our local ecosystem and serving global markets.
While Aegros AI is a new venture, Mark’s track record in New Zealand is already established. He has previously delivered work for the NZ Navy, Maritime NZ, contributed to one of New Zealand's first online nursing programmes, and developed MIT's online Skipper Restricted Limits course (which is still in use today). This history gives us absolute confidence that he is here to build a foundational business, not just register one.
Founder, jurisdiction, and timing have perfectly aligned. We are thrilled to welcome Mark and the Aegros AI team to the Bridgewest portfolio, and we look forward to supporting them as they scale life-saving educational access across the globe.
